Homework
Below is an overview of the homework expectations for first grade:
Reading: Students are expected to read the book in their Take Home Reader envelope for 15-20 minutes each night Monday-Thursday. Please sign the weekly take home reader sheet in your student's folder to indicate that he or she has read each night. If you need ideas on how to help your child with reading homework, please refer to the reading strategies sheet in the Take Home Reader envelope.
Reader's Response: Students should use their take home reader books to answer the questions on the reader's response sheet. Questions should be answered by drawing a picture and by writing a response in complete sentences. If your student is struggling with what to write, have him or her respond to the question verbally. Then repeat the response back slowly so your student can write down their response.
Math: Math homework will be sent home Monday and is to be returned on Friday. Repeat practice of skills throughout the week is much more effective than completing all homework in one night.
Trick Words: Please practice Trick Words with your student nightly. These words should not be sounded out, and students need to recognize the words right away for mastery. Students should also practice writing Trick Words so they can spell them correctly while writing.
